Workshop on Cancer Biometrics: Identifying Biomarkers and Surrogates of Tumors in Patients

Masur Auditorium, National Institutes of Health
October 30, 2003

Dear Colleague:

Welcome to the first Cancer Biometrics Workshop. This unique Workshop has been organized by the International Society for Biological Therapy of Cancer (iSBTc) in cooperation with individuals from the Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program (CTEP) of the NCI and the United States’ FDA. We are delighted to have assembled an outstanding group of individuals to discuss the exciting and challenging field of identification of biomarkers and surrogates in patients receiving cancer immunotherapy or other modalities. The goal of this meeting is to develop and publish iSBTc guidelines for identification and development of Cancer Biometrics (biomarkers and surrogates of tumor in patients). These guidelines will be prepared by a Steering and Writing Committee based on input received from all Workshop participants. These guidelines will be published in the March/April 2004 issue of the Journal of Immunotherapy, the official journal of iSBTc. We are hopeful that these guidelines will foster enlightened clinical investigation and facilitate communication in this rapidly changing field. While the publication of these guidelines is the principal goal of this Workshop, we are hopeful that the formal presentations, discussions, and personal and professional interactions will lay the groundwork for future research, scientific collaborations, and educational symposia.

The Workshop leadership and the International Society for Biological Therapy of Cancer are committed to productive and collaborative advances in the field of immunotherapy. We look forward to your contributions to the Workshop and hope that you find the experience rewarding.
